Milrinone is used in the treatment of severe congestive heart failure (where the heart cannot pump enough blood to the rest of the body) when conventional medicines have failed, and in acute heart failure (sudden decrease in the heart?s capacity to pump blood around the body) following a heart surgery. In children, it is used for the same reasons, however, only for short-treatment up to 35 hours.

Milrinone belongs to a class of medicines called phosphodiesterase inhibitors. It inhibits the enzyme phosphodiesterase-3, which eventually increases the contractility in the heart tissue, thereby, increasing the capacity of the heart to pump blood effectively.
