Dorzolamide is used as an adjuvant therapy (to beta-blockers) or as monotherapy (in patients non responsive to beta-blockers or in whom beta-blockers are contraindicated) to treat elevated intraocular pressure (increased fluid pressure inside the eye) in patients with ocular hypertension, open-angle glaucoma, or pseudo-exfoliative glaucoma (clogging due to flaky dandruff-like material that peels off the outer layer of the lens of the eye, raises pressure in the eye).
Dorzolamide belongs to a class of medications called carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. ?It works by inhibiting the enzyme carbonic anhydrase thereby causing a reduction in the fluid pressure in the eye.
